Across the street from the corner tower of the Spaso-Evfimiev Monastery is the Church of Simeon the Stylite, intended for winter services.

Short story

The first Simeon Church was built at the turn of the 16th - 17th centuries. as a "twin" temple in the summer Smolensk Church residents from the Skuchilikha settlement, adjacent to Euthymius monastery... The settlement was inhabited by peasants taken out of the subordinate monastic estates. Perhaps the "working people" missed their native lands, from where they were resettled, which gave the name to the settlement - "Skuchilova".

There were many immigrants in the settlement, including artisans, bricklayers and brick-makers; lived crowded. According to another version, on the territory of the former settlement, trade carts traveling from Moscow, Yaroslavl, Kostroma and Shuya were "crowded". In 1749, the Slobozhians erected a new stone church on the site of the wooden Simeon Church, and, as before, consecrated it in the name of Simeon the Stylite... The Monk Simeon, who lived in the 5th century AD, is known as the founder of pillars, a new form of asceticism, which consisted in continuous prayer on a “pillar” (tower). At the end of the 18th century, a classic bell tower with a high spire was erected between the Smolensk and Simeonovskaya churches, completing the ensemble of paired suburban churches.

Architecture of the Simeon Church

The Church in the name of St. Simeon is located 10 - 15 meters from the Smolensk Church. The Simeon Church in Suzdal, which is similar in shape to the wooden cathedrals in Kletsk, was built according to a three-part scheme - the church itself (a low quadruple), the refectory and the apse are combined into one volume. Simple in architecture and modest in decor, the Church of St. Simeon emphasizes the height and elegance of the summer Smolensk church.
